STAY POSITIVE
The economy is full of challenges and uncertainty. I suggest some strong resolutions, and positive thinking especially if you are leading a business. 1. Stay on the offensive. I know defensive actions are necessary right now; layoffs, reduced compensation, and other cutbacks. But watch out. This can lead to obsessing on the internal, which can lead to forgetting what keeps your whole enterprise going in the first place -- CUSTOMERS! Your positive energy sets an example for your people to keep delivering innovative products and services. 2. Remember: Your customers are hurting too. Offer them better than ever value, and you will sell them more today, and increase your chances of keeping their loyalty. 3. Make it very clear to your people the meaning of the term "Integrity". You have told them that integrity is a given, you have zero tolerance for people who act unethically. Far too often violations are committed by "regular" employees who have found a way to maneuver on the edge of your business. Explicitly spell out what is right and wrong. Make integrity black and white. No exceptions! When you start making exceptions to a rule, you have NO RULE. Just a lot of words! 4. Because of the challenges this year it will undoubtedly be filled with some small victories and great efforts. Have fun with them! Recognize and reward the people who are delivering! These ideas should help get you through the year in decent shape.
